America 250: How to Experience Niagara Falls State Park Like a Local

Angela Berti of NYS Parks reveals insider tips for prime fireworks views at Niagara Falls, America's oldest state park — and more.

Q: How is America’s 250th anniversary extra special for the park?

ANGELA BERTI: Any chance to celebrate our history and the role this park plays in preserving public space is a chance to remind people of our rich heritage. Niagara Falls is truly an iconic American destination on everyone’s bucket list.

Q: Where are the best spots in the park to watch the fireworks?

AB: Terrapin Point and Prospect Point. Fireworks happen in the Gorge just at the brink of the Falls, so you need a good perch along the rim to get that iconic view. The Observation Tower is also very popular.

Q: Are there any other special events happening during the Fourth of July weekend?

AB: This year features a special Fourth of July fireworks show set to music. We also encourage people interested in history to head to Old Fort Niagara, celebrating the 300th anniversary of the French Castle — the oldest building on the Great Lakes.

Q: What are your favorite ways to experience the park?

AB: I love walking the trails in the Whirlpool and Devil’s Hole areas, watching people experience the Falls for the first time at Prospect Point and standing on the Hurricane Deck at the Cave of the Winds.
