Those who desire a happy medium between the seclusion of Middle Bass and energy of Put-in-Bay will appreciate the laid-back lifestyle of Ohio’s largest island.

“Kelleys Island is filled with boaters and outdoor lovers and families,” Jill Bauer, public relations manager for Shores and Islands Ohio, says. “There’s lots of kids activities like mining sleuths, mini golf, Glacial Grooves, Kelleys Island Museum and the Inscription Walk.”

Handicapped and stroller friendly, the glacial grooves — a National Natural Landmark — recently completed major renovations to make the experience more accessible, including replacing fencing with glass and widening walkways.

“There are all these beautiful scenic overlooks, and you can see down into the quarry,” Bauer says, adding that the nearby Kelleys Island State Park is a great place to go swimming. “You can go out really far and be up to your waist. It’s great for kids.”

Head to Kelleys Island Adventours to book a guided biking, hiking or kayaking excursion. Anglers of all ages should join Capt. Joel Byer’s NachoFish Charter.

Read to shop and grab a bite? Park the golf cart and stroll along West Lakeshore Drive and Division Street. Start with trips to Island Mining Co. for gems; Village Peddler for gifts and home décor; and Kelleys Island General Store for souvenirs, summer attire and daily needs. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, uncover paradise on the patio of Dockers Waterfront Bar & Restaurant. Across the street, order a famous Brandy Alexander and Lake Erie perch at Village Pump. In the mood for barbecue? Try Peeper’s and its mouthwatering smoked dishes.

Grab a glass of Glacial White at Kelleys Island Wine Co., a pet-friendly winery. The property is also home to KI Cantina, the island’s only Mexican restaurant. If you only have one evening to spare, West Bay Bar and Restaurant sets off a cannon every night to celebrate the unbeatable sunset view.

Stay and play: Kelleys Island Venture Resort is the only hotel, but the island is home to several bed and breakfasts, including the Inn of Kelleys Island, which has been hosting guests for more than 100 years, and Water’s Edge Retreat, where every room includes a lakefront view.
